THE BIBLE OF ELDER JACOB HONEGGER
AT THE HOUSEHOLD SALE OF LATE FORREST BROTHER ROGER HONEGGER, A BOX CONTAINING SOME OLD GERMAN HYMNALS AND A BIG OLD GERMAN BIBLE WENT UP FOR AUCTION. I BOUGHT THE BOX, BEING ONLY INTERESTED IN THE GERMAN HYMNALS, PASSING THE OLD BIBLE TO LLOYD AND NANCY BACHTOLD.
I KNEW THE OLD BIBLE AT ONE TIME BELONGED TO NORTH SIDE ELDER JACOB HONEGGER, BECAUSE THERE WAS A HONEGGER FAMILY GENEALOGY IN THE FRONT COVER WRITTEN IN GERMAN. ROGER WOULD HAVE INHERITED IT DOWN THE LINE, BEING JACOB’S GREAT GRANDSON. BUT THAT WASN’T THE MOST AMAZING PART OF THIS STORY. IN THE BIBLE WERE SOME PAGES OF OLD GERMAN WRITING. COME TO FIND OUT, THE PAGES WERE FROM OUR CHURCH’S FOUNDER SAMUEL FROEHLICH, WRITTEN IN HIS OWN HAND THE FOLLOWING:
I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE CHRISTIAN HOUSE RULE AND THE WAY THAT LEADS TO THE HEAVENLY FATHERLAND. TO DENY YOURSELF AND THE LORD WILL BE YOUR LEADER. GIVE YOURSELF OVER TO THE LORD WITHOUT RESERVATIONS. FOLLOW LIKE A CHILD WOULD HIS MOTHER.
WORK IN SILENCE FOR THE EVERLASTING LIFE AND FORGET NOT THE ONES WHO SUFFER AND ARE IN NEED.
A DOWNCAST SPIRIT TURNS YOUR GOLD INTO LEAD.
IF THEY MOCK YOU, HANG YOUR HEAD.
IF THEY BEAT YOU, RECEIVE IT JOYFULLY.
BATTLE FOR THE TRUTH, BUT WITH A HUMBLE SPIRIT AND JOURNEY TOWARD ZION.
THE WEAPONS OF YOUR KNIGHTHOOD SHOULD NOT BE FLESHLY WEAPONS. JESUS, THE MASTER OF LOVE, DOES NOT TOLERATE ANY DEFENSE. DON’T FIGHT OVER THE LORDSHIP OF THIS WORLD. WHAT STANDS, LET STAND AND WHAT FALLS, LET LAY.
BATTLE AGAINST EVERY TEMPTATION AND WHAT YOU DENY YOURSELF OF IS YOUR SPIRIT’S GAIN. YOUR POWER AND YOUR GLORY IS YOUR SUBMISSIVENESS.
DON’T FIGHT OVER OPINIONS. THE LORD IS YOUR ONE AND ONLY.
SUFFER FORCEFULLY AND BRING EVERYTHING BEFORE THE LORD AND HE WILL HELP YOU OVERCOME.
IN HEAVEN IS THE THRONE. IF YOU WANT TO SHINE, SHINE BEFORE GOD AS YOUR INWARD MAN.
TO RAISE YOURSELF UP BEFORE MAN IS AN ABOMINATION BEFORE GOD.
TO GATHER RICHES HAS NO GAIN.
TO BE RICH IS A CLEAN HEART. THAT IS THE COIN IN THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM THAT WILL LAST IN ETERNITY.
SEEK WISDOM IN THE HOLY WORD.
PETITION FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT, FOR MIGHTY IS THE FAITH IN JESUS AND STRONGER IS LOVE, BECAUSE IT OVERCOMETH DEATH.
TOLERANCE, SUFFERING AND SILENCE ARE THE PILGRIM’S LANGUAGE. YOUR COMMUNICATION WITH GOD AND YOUR FELLOWMAN IS YOUR RELIGION. I ASK THE GUIDANCE OF THE LORD JESUS SO I CAN FULFILL. AMEN.
DEAR BROTHERS, RECEIVE THESE WORDS IN LOVE AND I COMMIT YOU TO THE LORD, WHO IS ALMIGHTY AND TRUE, WHO WILL SAVE HIS CHILDREN FROM THE TRIBULATION THAT WILL COME AFTER ALL BELIEVERS, WHEN ALL THE WOOD IS CONSUMED AND ONLY THE PURE GOLD EXISTS. FOR THIS YOU NEED THE LOVE OF ALL YOUR SOUL, FROM HEART, FROM YOUR BEING, WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.
FROM DEAR BROTHER S. H. FROEHLICH
THE LIFE OF JACOB HONEGGER
JACOB HONEGGER WAS BORN IN SWITZERLAND ON MARCH 8, 1832 TO HEINRICH AND VERENA (NAF) HONEGGER. JACOB, WITH HIS FAMILY, CAME TO AMERICA IN 1866; SETTLING TEMPORARILY IN MORTON, ILLINOIS BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THE FORREST REGION IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR. HE TILLED A FARM NOT FAR FROM THE JOSEPH VIRKLER FAMILY, PRIOR TO THE NORTH SIDE CHURCH WAS BUILT, WHEN EVERYONE WAS STILL MEETING IN MEMBERS HOMES.
HE HAD BEEN A MINISTER IN ZURICH AND WHEN THE INCREASING MEMBERSHIP BECAME TOO MUCH OF A BURDEN FOR ELDER RUDOLPH LEUTHOLD ALONE, HE RESUMED PREACHING. SOME YEARS LATER, ELDER LEUTHOLD PRIOR TO RETIRING, CONFERRED THE NORTH SHIP ELDERSHIP UPON HIM. ELDER HONEGGER ALSO SHARED WITH MARTIN STEIDINGER, THE SOUTH SIDE ELDERSHIP AFTER CHRISTIAN GERBER’S DEATH IN 1910. ELDER HONEGGER RETAINED THESE POSITIONS UNTIL DEATH OVERTOOK HIM AT THE AGE OF EIGHTY-EIGHT.
FAILING HEALTH ENFEEBLED HIM CONSIDERABLY AND HE ENCOUNTERED DIFFICULTY IN STANDING - ESPECIALLY AT THE PULPIT FOR ANY PROTRACTED TIME. TO OVERCOME THIS, MINISTER JOHN MAURER, SR., BUILT A SMALL TABLE BETWEEN PULPIT AND MINISTER’S BENCH THAT COULD ACCOMMODATE HIS BIBLE. THIS ALLOWED HONEGGER TO READ AND THEN DELIVER THE SERMON FROM HIS SEATED POSITION.
HE LIVED ON A FARM NEAR THE CHURCH UNTIL HIS DEATH ON NOVEMBER 22, 1920. HE IS BURIED IN THE NORTH SIDE CHURCH CEMETERY.
